How do birth control pills work, and do they hinder anything?

aly t asked: I’ve heard that they thicken the entrance into the cervix, making it difficult for sperm to get through… and I also heard that while taking birth control pills, all menstrual bleeding doesn’t come out.
I’m very curious as to what the real answers are. Thanks!!
